Is a Standing Seam Metal Roof Right for Me?

The first step is to determine if a standing seam metal roof is suitable for your home. This roof style is appropriate for most residential structures but not all. If your home has a flat roof, for instance, then you’ll need to consider a different roof style. In fact, the pitch of your roof is quite important and may dictate the panel types that are available to you.

If your home is suitable, then a standing seam metal roof is an excellent choice. While it will cost more up front than a traditional asphalt roof, it will provide you a lower total cost of ownership over the life of the roof. This is due to the lifespan of the material but also the energy efficiency of the roof and its maintenance requirements. Standing seam metal roofs are also highly fire resistant and ideal for solar panels and snow retention systems.

Types of Metal Roofing We Install

As experienced metal roofing contractors, we can customize and install many different types to meet your needs and your home’s architectural style. NexGen sells and installs metal roofs in many different colors, styles, and finishes. These attractive roofs can mimic the look of asphalt, shakes or shingles, cedar, tile, or slate. Choose from a variety of standing seam styles, with lighter color roofs offering the greatest reflectivity and energy efficiency.

Snap-Lock

Snap-lock metal roofing involves panels that have been roll-formed with either male or female edges, and these edges allow the panels to snap into place. These are engineered panels that allow for higher performance than other metal roof styles and which are appropriate for any environment when installed correctly.

Mechanical Seam

Mechanical seam panels are similar to snap-lock except that they do not float and require the panels to be locked together using either a hand or mechanical seamer. There are two core styles—single and double lock—and double lock is suitable to lower pitches and generally preferred for harsher climates.

Batten Panel

Batten panels are roll-formed to have two upright edges that can be positioned side by side. A metal cap is then positioned over those legs and either snaps into place or is mechanically seamed. The two most common types are tee seams, which are preferred in harsher climates, and snap caps, which allow for more design options.

Customize Your New Metal Roof Pattern

Striations—also referred to as rib rollers and stiffening ribs—are patterns that are roll-formed into the metal roofing panel in between the seams. These are added during the manufacturing process to enhance curb appeal and to reduce oil canning, which is the perceived waviness of a metal panel. It also serves a practical purpose in that it makes the panel easier to install. There are a number of patterns available, and some of the most common are flat, V-ribs, bread ribs, and pencil ribs.

> Bead Ribs

Bead ribs have rectangular indents and tend to have the widest ribs.

> Pencil Ribs

Pencil ribs are called such because the ribs are narrow and circular.

> Flat

Flat panels have no idents between the seams.

> V-Ribs

V-rib is a classic style with deep corrugations that result in attractive shadows.
